Jessica Levman

Artist Statement

My work explores possibilities of bodily experience and representation -
whole bodies, fragmented bodies, internal and external bodies, diffusing
bodies, forms not categorized, fixed, bounded. Bodies in ecstasy, in fear
and trauma, empty bodies, full and sensuous bodies, dead and living
bodies.

My images reflect the renewal and regeneration in the cycles of birth and
death. They explore the patterns and cycles of nature and the deep
connections between things, such as human and animal bodies and
bones, veins and arteries, roots, leaves and branches, as well as the
interrelationship between the body and its environment and between
internal and external worlds. My work reflects life in transformation,
connected, melding, at times in pain, deformed, yet also beautiful.

Questioning social norms and conventions that attempt to contain,
control, and make palatable and pretty the body, emotions and nature,
the work is an entry into the dark and painful places we shy away from,
into fear, the abject and the unconscious.
