Doug Downey
Artist Statement: My inspiration comes from the rugged beauty of nature. Not to copy, but to simplify and interpret. By going to nature and zeroing in on one little spot, from all she has to offer, I try to capture the intimacy of that one moment in time. That statement rendered on location may be all that is necessary to say, or an idea to be expanded upon later in the studio. Bio Doug is primarily a self taught artist. He attended Memorial University Fine Arts Program at Sir Wilfred Grenfell Campus, Corner Brook, NL. Most of Doug’s paintings have been rendered in oil; however, as of the past three years, his work is in acrylics. Doug has also done carving/sculpture. En plein air often provides the inspiration and mood for the rendering of a particular painting. Occasionally, Doug has held solo shows and participated in group exhibits. Doug has exhibited and sold at the National Art Gallery CNIB Auction in Ottawa and also exhibited and sold at the “Hang Art, Lift Hearts” Charitable Art and Auction for Dystonia in Toronto. His work was the recipient of a First Place Award at Spruce Meadows Agricultural Fair in Calgary. Artwork has been presented to a former premier of Newfoundland and Labrador as well as to a Lieutenant Governor. Work has been commissioned and purchased by the Department of National Defense, various business corporations and institutions. Works have been purchased through the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Procurement.
