Bill Ryan

Artist Statement:

Art has always been my passion.

Always enthralled and captivated by our scenic bays and coves, I first roamed the coast camera in hand, later replacing it with a field easel and the satisfaction of having found that which truly excited me.

Plein Air painting has to this day remained magical to me. The lure of the rugged coastline decorated with the simplistic saltbox houses and weathered fishing stages, married with the ever changing atmospheric conditions compel me to paint. The temperamental elements often result in a struggle with the painting, creating a sense of urgency to capture the essence quickly and of that moment in time.

With Portraits I work fast and deliberate, attempting to make each brushstroke important.

Being self taught has offered me a unique opportunity to develop my own approach. I am fascinated with the history of art and it’s ceaseless source of inspiration and ideas.  The freedom to choose my own direction keeps me enthusiastic about painting and ever interested in varying  my style and approach.
